The Different Trip: Visit SVWA school in Sichuan, China, 2014

The Different Trip-- Visit SVWA school in Sichuan, China, 2014
by Mawyuan lee

My first impression of the principal and the office administrator as they greeted us was that they seemed pretty ordinary. The car they drove was out of style and covered with mud, but they didn't seem extremely needy. How the mud landed on the roof, I was not sure. "It will take about two hours," they said. The ride gradually steepened as we advanced up the mountains. The nicely paved cement road disappeared, replaced by dirt and mud. Soon it was farmland, trees, and an occasional village.

When we finally arrived at JinPen Elementary School, we were ushered into the principal's office across the street. As the adults were making small talk, I glanced at the school. The school seemed nice enough. Even though it wasn't the most modernized institute in the world, it was neat and clean. There were stairs leading up to the school, which was white with a small mural in front. The dismissal bell rang and the students spilled out of the classrooms. After a minute or two, our group heads toward the school. All the smaller children were gathered in groups on the first floor, either talking or racing. A few older girls who I assume are in sixth grade were lined up in the middle of the second floor, watching everyone as if they were the protectors of the school surveying the campus. As I walked toward the classrooms, I was aware that more than a few of eyes were upon me. Children streamed past me as they squeezed to get into the picture mom was preparing to take.
